Newly Redesigned Disney Store Opens in Bayside + Giveaway

I had to pleasure of being invited to attend the Grand Opening of the newly redesigned Disney Store in the Bayside Marketplace. Being that it was on May 18th, my son’s birthday, I thought my kids would especially enjoy this event. Well, I wasn’t disappointed.

We were greeted with a row of Disney Store employees welcoming everyone to come in. We started our tour in an interactive storytelling area, they call The Theater. In this area, they will have scheduled activities for the kids, so that families come here for more than just shopping. They have these video monitors that allow you to pick movies to be shown on the big screen. My kids picked up masks to play with while there.

You follow the path next to the Plush Area. In this corner nook, there are mountains of plush Disney characters.

Then you travel over to the other side of the store, passing through digital tree arches. The arches feature different images depending on the season of the year.  At this point, they pointed out that on the store’s walls, towards the ceiling, there was a painted skyline featuring notable Miami attractions.

Then we entered the princess area, which highlighted a magical mirror. The mirror displays images and a short story of a princess when you wave her wand in front of it.

Each princess has her own wand, including the newly crowned Merida from Brave.

There was also a Castle featuring princess figures on top. As you can imagine, my daughter especially loved this area. Circling back to the boy side, I noted a whole collection of Iron and Avenger items, as well as the soon to premier Monsters University movie memorabilia. (We got a sneak peek while at Disney Social Media Moms and I can say it was awesome!)

Outside the store, there was a line of people waiting to get in for the official opening. (I got to go in early as media.) There was a host inviting kids to come up and dance, or be seen on tv. Of course, my daughter had to put herself out there dancing. My son joined in, trying a daring move and landing square on the concrete. He cried for a moment and I encouraged him to brush it off.

After that he donned his Mickey ears and they called him up front to sing Happy Birthday to him in front of everyone. Everyone, including the families waiting on line, sang to him. I was so enthralled in the moment, that I did not record it on video. Sometimes you have to put down the camera, and just enjoy the moment.

After that, the Boys and Girls Club came and learned that the Disney characters would be arriving early just for them. This also meant I needed to get my daughter out quick, as she is super scared of characters. The Tinkerbell statue is more her speed.

As we prepared to exit, they gifted us with a giftbag that included a Stuffed Monsters University 15″ Sully $19.99), a Monsters University Journal ($16.50), a Monsters University water bottle ($12.50), and a Monsters University totebag ($3.50). I would have to say this made Joaquin’s 4th birthday experience more than memorable.

Let Your Hair Down Friday- Cinco de Mayo Edition

(Be warned. This is my miscellaneous, no holds barred Friday blog post where I spew random thoughts in no organized fashion. You may find it funny, you may not. You may learn something or you might kill brain cells. It all depends on the mood I’m in. All my other posts are coherent, I promise.)
Who’s ready for Cinco de Mayo? I’ve got my tequila ready & thinking of making some yummy chicken flautas  (aka dorados in some parts). I’ve never been one for the whole salt & lime ritual. In fact, I actually dilute my tequila with lemon lime soda rather than take shots. (Oh, the horror!)  Speaking of which, you can check out this interesting post on how to drink tequila: http://www.wikihow.com/Drink-a-Tequila-Shot I’m not much of a drinker, but I do occasionally imbibe. As for the flautas, I could probably eat 10 of them in one sitting. You probably didn’t know this, but I love to eat. My aunt introduced me to flautas a few years ago, and now I seek them out whenever I go to a Mexican restaurant. With a good salsa verde, these things are bangin’.
I may or may not also be heading down to Brickell Fest Cinco de Mayo on Sunday (one of the perks of working with the Miami Brickell Chamber). Tell me this flyer isn’t awesome:

I love those Dos Equis commercials with the “most interesting man in the world.” Pure marketing genius.

Well, it’s a bit late and I seriously need to hit the hay. The kiddies still wake up at the crack of dawn. Hope you enjoy your weekend!

http://images6.fanpop.com/image/photos/32100000/gru-mrgru-32128268-286-313.jpg

In the first Despicable Me film, Agnes annoys Gru with her funny noises using her mouth and hands. Have everyone at party come up with their own annoying sound. If you record this game, you can have a very fun and memorable video.

Surprise your guests with this original salsa recipe created by chef Isa Souza in commemoration of Despicable Me 2, which will be released in theaters July 3, 2013.

“Cinco de Minion” salsa recipe:

Ingredients:

3 yellow bell peppers (2 chopped and reserve the 3rd to serve)

1 small onion, chopped

2 garlic cloves, diced

2 tablespoons of sour cream

2 teaspoons of salt

3 tablespoons of olive oil

½ teaspoon of ground cumin

½ teaspoon of ground black pepper

Preparation:

Heat a medium-sized pan at high temperature.  Add the olive oil, followed by the garlic and onion, stirring constantly.

Add yellow bell pepper. Reduce the temperature and season with salt, pepper and cumin. Mix well and let it cook for about 15 minutes on low heat. Stir constantly.

When the yellow bell pepper is well cooked, remove from heat.

Add the sour cream. Pour all into a blender and mix. It will form a thick sauce.

Cut the top of the reserved pepper to serve as a container for the salsa . Remove all seeds.  Pour the salsa in the yellow bell pepper and use the top of the pepper to decorate.

I hope you enjoy your Cinco de Mayo celebrations this weekend. I’ve got another post more focused on mommy you can check out. Just see Let Your Hair Down Friday.

Although I am hosting a Twitter Party next Wednesday in celebration of the movie Despicable Me 2, this post was not sponsored. I just thought it would be fun to share.

Allstate Foundation Drive It Home Comes to Florida

Thank you to the Allstate Foundation and National Safety Council for sponsoring this post. Check out Drive it Home, a website by and for parents, dedicated to keeping our teen drivers safe.

Last week, I had the lovely opportunity to enjoy a solo road trip across Florida in order to attend the Drive It Home event in Ft. Myers. It took about three hours to get there thanks to traffic, but I have never actually been there before. Here’s me by the registration booth:

Here’s a bit of background on the new Drive It Home program: It was recently launched by the NSC with the help of the Allstate Foundation. It was founded to educate parents on driving risks and offers them specially created resources to help keep their teens safer on the road, especially after a teen gets a driver’s license. It is designed by parents for parents and includes an interactive website – driveithome.org – featuring engaging videos, practice tips and other valuable resources. As part of Drive it Home, the Drive It Home Show has been stopping in 14 cities across the country giving parents a fun look at the serious subject of teen driving. The show features the comedians of world renowned Second City Communications and safety experts as they help parents understand the real hazards teens face on the road, better coach teen drivers and learn about state teen driving laws.

So let’s get back to the actual event. Despite the drive, I am glad I went because not only did I get to see new sites, I also had the opportunity to learn a few things. Yes the event was targeting parents of teens, but I learned some things that I could even use right now with my preschoolers. Plus I know many of my followers have children and teens that the information would be valuable to. For instance, How long does driver’s ed last? It is usually about 16 years or so, because your kids are watching you every time they get in the car with you.

At the event, we heard the story of Maryann and her son Luke. Luke was just 15 years old when he got into an accident the day before Valentine’s Day. On Valentine’s Day, he was brain dead. He was buried on February 18th, the day before his 16th birthday. Luke was not the driver. He was looking for a quick ride home and hopped into the car with a friend who decided to go off-roading (rather than bringing him straight home, which was only 5 minutes away). This young driver had also been seen in the past driving recklessly. Truth is that most young drivers need additional training even after they get their license.

I got my license in NY, which only grants a Junior License at 16 and you can only get a Senior License at 17 if you have taken driver’s ed. Fortunately, I took driver’s ed and received a lot of training both before and afterward. I remember driving once with friends in the car and music playing loudly, and I made a U-turn at a light on a road in which U-turns were apparently illegal. I was pulled over and I remember the cop disciplining me for having too many distractions. Fortunately he cut me a break. However, there are many teens out there driving with their friends, listening to music, distracted by texting & tweeting (which practically in my days); and no one is there to make sure they are driving safely. You, as parents, can help reduce the risk for your children by taking an active role in your child or teen’s driving education. You can start young by changing how you drive to model safer behavior. You can still practice discipline with your teen even after he or she gets a license. To illustrate my point you can watch this Youtube video of teens talking about their parent’s driving behavior.

Here are also some facts & tips I learned while at the event:

    • You should avoid purchasing a high performance vehicle for your teen, as their inexperience can get them injured or killed behind the wheel of a powerful vehicle.
    • Teens should not ride with other teens, unless they know their driving practices are safe.
    • When your teen is learning to drive, you should let them practice in paths they would normally travel, rather than just the parking lot.
    • Even after they get a license, you should continue to practice with them. “One of the most dangerous years in a person’s life is the first 12 months after getting a driver’s license. Annually, there are about two million teens under the age of 18 in their first year of driving on U.S. roads, the National Safety Council (NSC) reports.”
    • Pre-teens ages 12-15 are especially focused on driving and at the age of 16, belt use goes dramatically down. This is when they usually begin driving themselves.

I even learned some Florida facts too!:

  • Parents believe that risk-taking is the primary cause of crashes, when inexperience is the real issue. Only 16% of Florida parents say a teen’s lack of driving experience is the top cause of crashes. The national average is 18%.
  • Parents say it’s very important for their teen to learn a variety of skills behind the wheel, but aren’t teaching their teen to manage the highest risk driving situations.Nearly 38% of parents in Florida are not covering how to manage the deadly risks – such as nighttime driving and driving with young passengers – with their teens. Oddly enough, parents and teens agree that they should have spent more time practicing in dangerous conditions, according to The Allstate Foundation.

In addition to the driveithome.org website, you can also visit the Florida Teen Safe Driving Coalition at http://www.nsc.org/FLteens-GDL4U.

It was definitely an eye opening event and I am glad I trekked cross-state for it.

Bonus: I also got a chance to hang out with fellow bloggers Paula Bendfeldt-Diaz, Maybelline Valenti, Heather Lopez (me) and Alejandra Ramirez Castro. I’ve had a group over there for over a year and this was the first time I visited them where they live.

I was selected for this opportunity as a member of Clever Girls Collective, and the content and opinions expressed here are all my own.

I Rode the #DespicaBlimp… Sort of

Heather with the Minions

Some of you might know that the original flight was cancelled, as the weather was too rough in Orlando for the blimp to head down to Miami. I had a glimpse of hope that I would get to ride aboard the DespicaBlimp (an experience you can’t even buy), when I was told to come on Tuesday instead. However, as blimps are apparently fickle, we were informed that we MIGHT be able to go aboard, but there would be no flying into the heavens this day. Though it was sunny out, the wind was just strong enough to cause erratic flight patterns of the blimp.

While we waiting for the blimp to come closer, we were entertained by the Despicable Me minions while the blimp pilot gave us a quick history lesson regarding blimps and the DespicaBlimp tour.

minions and despicablimp

I have to admit that at the time, I was a bit bummed that we would not get to fly up. I mean, this was truly a bucket list worthy item.

blimp tether

We watched as the grounds crew prepared for the blimp to touch ground. As you can see, there is a man sitting up on the pole awaiting his job of securing the blimp to it so that it would not blow away. I have to admit that was somewhat comforting. As we got closer to the blimp, we realized how fragile this rather large airship truly is. The pilot assured us that once the blimp was secured to the pole, it could withstand extreme winds without any trouble at all.

Heather in front of DespicaBlimp

We learned that once the blimp was weighted, they had to replace an even amount of weight back on the ship for it to remain stabile. This meant that when one person got off, another would get on. We all took turns in groups of 3′s, boarding the ship.

blimp stairs

Once aboard, the pilot gave us a briefing and then gave us a chance to sit in the cockpit. According to them the two thumb salute is customary.

Heather Lopez in the DespicaBlimp cockpit

Then the pilot gave us a chance to take a pic together. One of the bloggers aboard with me was Joanna Mazewski of Babble fame. Being on board was kind of interesting as we could feel the ship move from side to side. The pilot showed us the “bladder” that is filled with air and gases. I realized at that moment, I was almost glad we didn’t go up. It was kind of frightening to feel how fragile it felt to be aboard.

Bloggers on the DespicaBlimp

Of course I couldn’t resist the urge to pose in front of the blimp with one of the minions.

Overall, it was pretty cool. I love when brands do creative things like this to promote. It has almost a guerilla marketing feel, except that creating and flying a blimp can be very expensive.

I leave you with this beautiful sunset image of the blimp:

Despicable Me 2 “DespicaBlimp” Takes Flight Tonight With Me In It!

If you are in the Miami area tonight, look up!  You just might see a giant yellow Minion floating high above you, because Universal Pictures and Illumination Entertainment’s Despicable Me 2 Despicablimp is stopping by on its journey across the US.

Cruising at an average height of 1,000 feet, the Despicablimp is traveling approximately 20,000 miles over the next few months going from coast-to-coast and points in between.  The blimp made its first appearance Saturday, March 23 over Nickelodeon’s 2013 Kids’ Choice Awards.

And tonight, somewhere around 5:30pm EST, I will be getting a chance to go up in that blimp (up to 500 feet). This is a bucketlist-worthy item, which can not be purchased. You must be invited. How cool is that?

Follow the Despicablimp’s Journey!

Visit the Despicablimp Command Center at www.despicablimp.comto track the airship via GPS and see the tour stops it is making along the way.  Fans can tweet sightings of the blimp or post photos to Instagram or Flickr using #despicablimp to be featured on the site, and for a chance to win weekly prize giveaways. There is even a Despicablimp sweepstakes, where one lucky Despicable Me fan will win a trip for four to the Hollywood world premiere of the film and get the once-in-a-lifetime chance to ride in the blimp! Follow @despicablimp on Twitter for real-time updates on where the blimp will be next.

Did you know?

  • The Despicablimp is one of only 15 airships flying in the world today.
  • The Despicablimp is an A-150 blimp, one of the largest in the world at 165-feet long, 55-feet high and 46-feet wide!  How big is that? You could fit approximately 75 million golf balls in the Despicablimp.
  • Blimps have the best safety record of any type of aircraft, and use less fuel in 2 weeks than a 747 uses to take off!
  • The blimp normally flies at 1,000 feet above the earth so that it’s easy to see the giant Minion, but it can fly as high as 10,000 feet above the ground to get over a mountain range.
  • The Despicablimp is lit from within using two 1,000-watt light bulbs and will be beautifully illuminated in the night sky.

Here are two cool videos about the making of the DespicaBlimp:

DESPICABLE ME 2 – IN THEATERS JULY3!

Disclosure: While I am not being monetarily compensated for this post, I did receive an invite to board and fly in the blimp, which can not be purchased. All opinions expressed are my own. Some content above was provided to me, but was not required to be included in my post.

Yo GABBA GABBA! Not Your Ordinary Kid’s Character Show

I was fortunate enough to win four tickets from the Young at Heart Mommy blog to the Yo GABBA GABBA! Live show in Ft. Lauderdale (Broward Performance Center) last weekend.

I have to admit that while I heard about the show and my kids watched it with my husband and family, I had never sat through a full episode before. Boy was I missing out.

From the moment we walked in, I knew this was no ordinary live show for kids. As a 90s teen, I could appreciate the intermingling of hip hop beats throughout the songs and dances. And with the appearance of Biz Markie, DJ’ing and beatboxing, I knew this show was designed with the parents in mind as well. (I should mention that when I was the PR rep of my college activities board over 10 years ago, we hired Biz Markie to DJ a show. So it was a kind of reunion for me, even though I didn’t actually get to meet with him in person this time.)

This show has somehow managed to avoid being too directed at children and too directed at appeasing adults. It really walked the tightrope gracefully. With it being only an hour long, with a 17 minute intermission, you could tell that they also knew the short attention spans of their audience. Even my husband enjoyed himself, and that is probably something unheard of when it comes to these kinds of shows. His only qualm was that there was beer for sale at the concession stand, but no one was buying. He had to hide in the hallway with his Heineken for fear he would be judged for drinking at a kid’s show. But why sale them if it weren’t okay to drink them?

Anyway, back to the show. With the various learning experiences to be had, my kids even braved “the dark” to participate. You should’ve seen them dancing their little butts off in the aisle. I kept having to stop my daughter from doing spins because she would lose her balance and fall into somebody. The show ended with confetti coming down from the ceiling everywhere. My kids giggled in delight. They thoroughly enjoyed themselves and demanded that they get to go again the next day (to which we did not acquiesce). We figure that we will wait for next time they are in town to attend.

After the show, we stopped by the science museum and headed around Riverwalk, which is absolutely amazing. We enjoyed being able to walk around the water and see the historical buildings. My husband uttered that walking was underrated and I concurred. We agreed that we should visit there again.

I was not compensated or asked to write this post. I wrote it of my own volition. All opinions are my own.

Giveaway: Easter Basket for Parents courtesy of Cafe La Llave

It’s Good Friday today and I am going to make it extra good. I was recently introduced to a coffee brand, Cafe La Llave, via one of my PR contacts. I had seen the packaging on the store shelves and I think at one of my in-laws’ houses, but I had never tried it myself.

We don’t make too much coffee in my house because we don’t have a coffee maker (the pot broke). In fact, this was a matter of contention the last time my father-in-law visited because he loves his coffee. He did not like that we had to buy coffee from outside the house. We picked up one of those small filters (that look like mini butterfly nets) that you use to make your own coffee in a small pot, and occasionally we’ll make it. (I’ve been secretly hoping Keurig will offer me a coffee machine to review, but that’s a whole other story.)

Well, back to Cafe La Llave. This brand is interesting to me. When I searched about them on the internet, I learned that they are available for sale in Target & Walmart, that they are not available locally in California, and that their social media presence appears to be fan created. Yes, I located a community Facebook Page and a YouTube Channel that state that they are created by the fans of the brand. Imagine that. A brand so appealing to its fans, that they took the liberty to create a social media presence for the brand on their own. I also noted on the packaging that it states “Tostado Especialmente para el Gusto Latino” (Roasted for the Latino Taste). Yes, a brand clearly committing itself to the Latin market. (I think they should have a presence at Hispanicize.)

Something else that intrigued me was that they approached me with an offer of a basket full of coffee goodies for myself and for one of my readers, but offered me the ability to design the giveaway however I wanted.

Being that Easter is in two days, I realized that we spend so much time getting baskets ready for the kids that there is little to no focus on ourselves. (Mommy & Daddy’s baskets are usually pretty paltry). I figured, why not do the giveaway as an Easter basket for Parents? So without further ado, here is the basket I am giving away:

Here is what the basket includes:

  • 2-10oz Cafe La Llave
  • 2-1.75oz Cafe La Llave
  • 1-8.8oz Decaf Cafe La Llave
  • 1- Cafetera
  • 4- Tazas de Espresso

The giveaway starts today (March 29th, 2013) and ends Sunday night, March 31st 11:59pm EST. It is open to US residents ages 18 and older. Please see full guidelines in the contest widget.

Disclosure: I received my own coffee basket in exchange for conducting this giveaway. All opinions are my own.
