Since it’s Watch This Wednesday, I am focusing on movies, videos and visuals. Plus, I have some cool flash giveaways for today only.
If you haven’t heard about the Parental Guidance movie yet, you soon will. “Comedy legends Billy Crystal and Bette Midler play Artie and Diane Decker, who are called in by their daughter (Marisa Tomei) to help care for their three grandkids. When their old-school parenting methods collide with their daughter’s new-school ways, the once-orderly household spins out of control.” I can totally relate to that chaos, so I am looking forward to checking this movie out.
In the spirit of the holidays, some of the cast members contributed some of their favorite holiday recipes. Check them out (and feel free to pin away).
Momma’s Chicken a la King What dish makes you feel right at home? A fluffy biscuit topped with cream sauce piled high with chicken, mushrooms and bell peppers. It’s a dish that my entire family loves! When mom’s in the kitchen making it, we all insist on being her “taste testers”! I hope this dish warms your holidays just like it’s done for us:)
Ingredients: 1/2 cup butter, plus 3 tablespoons 1 green bell pepper, diced 1 red bell pepper, diced 1 pound mushrooms, thinly sliced 1/2 cup all-purpose flour 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/4 teaspoon pepper 1 1/4 cups chicken broth 3/4 cup milk 3/4 cup heavy cream
2 cups pulled, cooked chicken 1 jar (2 ounces) diced pimientos, drained 1 tablespoons dry Sherry (or more, to taste) Instructions: 1. Melt 3 tablespoons butter in sauté pan over medium-high heat. Cook bell peppers and mushrooms in butter, stirring occasionally, until soft.
2. Meanwhile in a separate stockpot, melt remaining 1/2 cup butter. Stir in flour, salt and pepper. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly until smooth; remove from heat. Stir in broth, milk and heavy cream. Heat to boiling, stirring constantly. Boil and stir 1 minute.
3. Stir in bell peppers, mushrooms, chicken, pimientos, and Sherry. Cook until hot. Serve over puff pastry or toast.
Auntie Carol’s Cranberry/Pear Sauce
Auntie Carol, who I call “Carrie,” is a great cook. She has us over to her house for the holidays when I’m in Connecticut visiting, and she always makes her amazing cranberry sauce. It’s like candy, but you get away with it because you eat it with your turkey! This recipe is one that Carrie got from my great grandmother (Grammy) and then added her own ingredients to make it extra yummy. Grammy is 90 and is not in the best health now, so it’s especially delicious, knowing that it was a recipe passed down from her.
12-16oz.fresh cranberries (rinsed)
2‐3 medium ripe pears (Bosc or Bartlett)
1 cup sugar
1 cup liquid (orange juice, lime juice, water)
Use a fine grater to collect the zest of the orange and the lime, and set zest aside.
Squeeze the juice of the orange and lime into a 1 cup measure. Top off with water.
Peel and core pears, and cut into ½ Inch pieces.
Add the sugar and liquid to a medium saucepan and bring to a boil.
Add rinsed cranberries and orange and lime zest, and bring back to a boil, then lower heat to simmer. (Be careful, as the cranberries explode as they cook.)
Add the pears to the cranberries mixture.
Simmer until all the cranberries have popped and the pears are tender.
Stir frequently but gently.
Transfer to a bowl, cool, and refrigerate several hours before serving.

My Mom – Ruth’s Famous Holiday Snickerdoodles!
My first time away from home over the holidays, I wanted to impress my girlfriend at the time with my mom’s famous Snickerdoodles. My intention was to make up a batch and wrap them up and put them in her Christmas stocking. I was running short on time and thought I could scrimp on some of the ingredients, so it was more like 70% my mom’s recipe and 30% my brilliant improvisational ingredients. I made the batch, so proud of myself, and decided to indulge with a few cookies to treat myself for all of my hard work and to savor the sweet taste of success only to discover perhaps the worst tasting cookie on the planet. In a panic, I called my mother back home in Texas who made up a batch and FedExed them to me and I was able to get them into my girlfriend’s Christmas stocking in the Jolly ole’ nick of time. Lesson learned: Never mess with perfection. Mama knows best.
1 cup soft shortening
1 1/2 cups sugar
2 2/3 cups sifted flour
2 teas Cream of Tartar
1 teas. baking soda
1/3 teas salt
Mixture of 2 teas cinnamon & 2 tbsp sugar
Blend shortening, sugar and eggs. Combine flour, cream of tartar, soda & salt in a sifter & sift into shortening mixture. Mix well. Shape into small balls, then roll into cinn. and sugar mixture. Place 2 inches apart on ungreased cookie sheet, and bake at 400 degress 10-12 minutes. 5 dozen
